Congratulations to ‘Getting Ahead” grads! Thirteen committed individuals recently completed their Getting Ahead classes offered through AGAPE. This sixteen-week course focuses on personal finances, budgeting, and employment skills toward the goal of self-sufficiency. Course participants benefit from mentors and resources offered by area non-profits, but there is no easy pass. Getting Ahead classes are part of the Bridges Out of Poverty initiative spearheaded by the Foundation and supported by members of the Bedford Area Resource Council. Participants in the Getting Ahead classes live in poverty. They typically do not have adequate resources to navigate their lives successfully. That lack of resources goes well beyond money alone; it includes medical care, transportation and nutrition. The Foundation’s Ruby Shield Fund is designed to help our less fortunate residents. Ruby was a highly successful realtor in Bedford who gave hundreds of volunteer hours through Bedford Ride and other non-profits. Donations to the Ruby Shield Fund not only honor this amazing woman, but they also help provide a brighter future for others.
For over twenty five years the Bedford Community Health Foundation has worked to improve the health of our community. Mammography screening for the poor, school nurses in every public school, therapy for the mentally and physically challenged, care for our elderly, emergency medical services, equipment for our local hospital – these are just a few of the challenges the Foundation has addressed. Careful and responsible financial management and planning allow for funding that affects every resident of Bedford and ensures a sound future for health-care in Bedford.
Our Foundation Offers You an Opportunity to Impact the Health of Our Community
We meet those needs through the support of our members and community residents like you. We are your health-care advocate and our vision is to make Bedford the healthiest community in Virginia.
